You should search out an attorney who has the expertise in your particular line of business. Thus if you are going into the construction field, locate an attorney who has had years of experience in that field. He will be aware of many of the unique problems facing you in such business. If you are engaging in a real estate transaction or a lease, locate an attorney who has that background... once again dealing with someone who knows many of the pitfalls of the field. You can locate such attorneys by contacting your city, county or state Bar Association and ask for several recommendations. You have to make the choice yourself. Another way to find a suitable legal counsel is to ask someone who is in a similar business to yours... sometimes they will help out with names. The next most important person to have as your advisor is an accountant. And, once again it is important to find someone or firm that has prior experience in your line of work. You can seek recommendations from local or state accounting associations or from someone who is in the similar kind of work you wish to start. Yes, these professionals will cost money and you should ask right from the start their hourly or per diem fees. Never hesitate to discuss fees, because the last thing you need is to have a disagreement with your professionals. |
Other professionals that you might consider are people who consult within the industry you plan to operate, people who have all the past black and blue marks from having made decisions within your industry. Such people can be located at various trade associations. SCORE members are subject to a "Code of Ethics" which
guarantees you confidentiality and it prohibits them from charging for their
services or making specific recommendations to people who can. We do,
however, recognize the importance of professional help, and recommend that
you use it where practical. With that in mind, we have assembled a list of
Lawyers, Accountants and Insurance people who are members of the Membership in the
Chamber does not guarantee reliability and this list is not intended to be an
endorsement or recommendation of those listed. Membership in the Chamber
does, however, indicate an interest in the business community and is an
indication of experience in that area. |
